Pay It Forward….

The expression “pay it forward” is used to describe the concept of asking that a good turn be repaid by having it done to others instead.

I heard about the “Pay It Forward” concept awhile ago and have always thought it was a great idea.  That is where it stopped though.  This year I have decided to try my best to adopt the “Pay It Forward” attitude.  Not sure if it is a mid-life crisis I am going through.  Whatever it may be here are a few ideas of things that can be done, which will make a difference to people, albeit small.  They don’t all cost money and I am sure we could all adopt some of these into our lives.

  1. put a coin in a parking meter, any parking meter, that’s about to expire
  2. leave a copy of a really great book you’ve read in a cafe for someone else to enjoy
  3. be nice to the customer service people who are trying to help you with your technological difficulties
  4. say something nice or funny  to the toll booth attendant (like, “Don’t drive too fast, now” or “Glad to have encountered you today”, or something less hokey)
  5. forgive a driver directing road rage at you
  6. buy or pack a meal for a homeless person
  7. give a warm coat to a homeless person
  8. offer to do pro bono work on a project where your skills are needed
  9. mentor someone
  10. make a donation
  11. say a prayer or whisper a kind wish for someone
  12. compliment a stranger
  13. next time you leave a foreign country, give all or some of what’s left of your currency to someone who resides in that country
  14. next time you’re at the airport, offer to pull the bags belonging to a woman or a mother with child out of the conveyor belt
  15. praise generously
  16. let someone cut in front of you at the grocery store
  17. give someone a chance to prove him or herself
  18. encourage someone to pursue their dream
  19. hold the door open for someone
  20. teach a child something you wish you knew at that age
  21. smile at someone who’s sad  / smile at a stranger

  23. offer sincere, kind words to someone who’s hurting
  24. visit a hospice and spend some time with a terminally ill patient
  25. spend some time with a senior citizen living alone

  27. offer to babysit for a single mother
  28. help a pregnant lady
  29. sit and talk with a homeless person and learn their story
  30. loan something to someone and forget about it
  31. do a spring clean at home and donate your unwanted books, toys, bedding to charity
  32. pay the person the toll fee for the car behind you
  33. assist with walk the dogs at an animal shelter
  34. buy a lotto ticket for a stranger
  35. send an extra sandwich to school with your children to give to someone who might not have lunch with them
Any thoughts and idea to add to this list would be more than welcome.
